Carnations (Dianthus caryophyllus) have been cultivated for over 2,000 years, with roots in the Mediterranean region. The name Dianthus comes from Greek—dios (god) and anthos (flower)—meaning “flower of the gods.” Ancient Greeks and Romans used carnations in ceremonies, crowns, and garlands.
